site build it storyHere is my Site Build It story, explaining how it all began for me. I lived in Washington state, spending some time in Everett, Snohomish, and, finally, Monroe. I found a job in Snohomish (only a seven mile commute from Monroe)doing web design for a small retail business.

I spent a great deal of time and effort building their web presence into something they could be proud of. I was proud of myself for the work I put in for them. I came to work every morning, did what needed to be done, and then clocked out for the day. This was my life, day in and day out, week after week, month after month....well, you get the idea. Nothing really new under the sun.

Finally, after eight years of loyal service to that company in Snohomish, WA, my job was suddenly outsourced. They gave me the boot, all in the name of saving a couple bucks.

I had mixed feelings about the whole thing. Although it was a stable job that I could count on (or so I thought!), I was treated poorly. I was given no respect, no consideration, and I hadn't seen a raise in six of those years I was there. No sick pay and no holiday pay either. Did you ever hear the song by Bob Seger called, "Feel Like A Number?" Yup, that was me.

I was completely expendable to them and realizing that hurt. I'll tell you something else: I was darned tired, both emotionally and mentally. Call me naive, but when you sink your life into someone else's business, shouldn't you be able to expect something in return? Is that so wrong to think?

I came to the realization that loyalty to any company was pure folly. They didn't care about me as a person. The only thing they cared about was the money I could put in their pockets and, beyond that, I was something to use and throw away at their leisure.

I needed to do something for myself, because absolutely no one else was going to do it for me.

Been there? Maybe you're there now.
